Many Benefits of Using Beeswax in Candlemaking
by Cory Willins

Most cheap, everyday candles are made of paraffin, but more
and more people are looking for beeswax candles. Beeswax
candles have been used since the Middle Ages by
connoisseurs who prefer their superior scent and other
benefits; they have always been a little more expensive
than other types, but most would agree that they are worth
the extra cost.
Clean and Pure
Chemicals are increasingly shunned today, with the warnings
of the hazards we are experiencing with the earth as a
result of our wastefulness. Paraffin candles are made from
the by products of petroleum and animal fat waste products.
Cheap, scented candles still dominate the shelves even
though they not only contain an assortment of chemical by
products, they contain the black soot commonly seen rising
from these ineffective burning light sources.
However, by burning beeswax, you are releasing negative
ions proven to increase the quality of the air and as a
result are good for allergy suffers and those afflicted
with hay fever. It is one of the few fuels which releases
beneficial negative ions as it burns.
Smelling good
The instantly recognizable scent of beeswax is reminiscent
of clover honey which is a common aromatherapy approach to
relaxation techniques. As there is no need to add essential
oils or outside fragrances to get the calming effect, this
makes the beeswax candle popular in meditation circles.
Many people also love the appearance of beeswax candles,
the warm, natural color and clear flame. Beeswax burns with
a much brighter flame than other candles; giving a good,
steady source of light. They will not sputter or flicker if
they have a good quality wick.
Spiritual Qualities
The evocative scent and high quality of pure, natural
beeswax has been used for centuries to give a calming
atmosphere that many believe is conducive to healing and
spiritual practises. The mystical powers of honey and bees
are mentioned in many myths and legends; after all, honey
is a natural form of nectar! The act of burning candles is
of course also closely tied to many spiritual rituals and
ceremonies, and most religions use candles in some form as
part of their worship. They are lit for remembrance, and to
mark special occasions, as well as to produce a gentle and
beautiful source of light and warmth that symbolises the
positive brilliance of mankind.
Finally, one of the most obvious benefits of beeswax candles
is that they last much longer than other forms of wax;
burning slower and giving a much longer burning time. So
buying cheaper candles may in the long run be a false
economy; when beeswax last longer, burn brighter and
ultimately bring clean, beautifully scented light into your
home, with all the benefits of a natural product.
