Entering the Traffic Selling Business
by Marc Radgers

You are already in the traffic selling business, even if you
don't know it yet. Do you have a site with adsense ads or
are you an affiliate from either a Clickbank merchant, a
Commission Junction merchant or from one of the countless
individual affiliate program? If you answered yes, then you
are already getting commissions for the traffic you send.
You are doing the marketing for someone else.
So, why should you expand to selling traffic directly?
There are several reasons:
1. If you are a member of an affiliate program, you are
helping other people to build their customer lists. They
will get the name and email address of the people who buy.
If you want to build your own customer list, you need your
own customers. Having your own list is very valuable -
making an offer to an existing customer is much less
expensive than gaining a new customer.
2. When you are in the traffic selling business, you have
practically a perpetual source of income. Your customers
will come every month and give you their money while you sit
in the easy chair, if they are happy with the results.
3. There are a limited number of affiliate relationships
that are possible within your market (ie: the subject of
your site) using just affiliate programs. So, how can you
expand? By selling traffic directly.
4. One of the nice things about the traffic selling business
is the steady flow of money. You can charge your customers
either on a pay per click basis or a fixed amount per month.
You don't need to wait that the merchant is making a sale.
If you have customers and a steady stream of very high
quality traffic, you will have a steady stream of income.
5. Your chances to do joint ventures with your customer base
is very high. Since your customers will be mostly other
webmasters from your specific market, they will be open for
your proposals.
I am sure you understand now why you should start selling
traffic. How to start selling traffic? I have listed a few
ways to get started, the best one first.
1. You can sell links at a flat rate every month. A popular
way to do this is to sell a link at the very top spot in one
of your directories for $5/month. If you have 100
directories, your potential monthly income from this type of
sale is $500/month! If you have 10 sites, that's $5,000 per
month. An advantage to this type of traffic sale is that you
don't need to track the traffic you send. You just put their
link in the top spot and leave it there as long as they pay
$5/month (or whatever rate you decide to charge monthly).
2. You can sell links in your directory for a flat rate per
click. I do this for 25 cents per click. To do this, you
will need a tracker program. There are many available for
free and many more available for a fee. You can also have
one programmed for you on Elance.com.
3. Selling your homepage - Charge a fixed sum per month or a
few cent for every click. I use this model on many sites and
charge 50 cent per click.
To collect your money, you need a payment processor. I
recommend PayPal, they are the easiest to use. You can set
up a subscription and automatically bill your customers $5
every month.
A better long-term option is getting your own merchant
account and setting up a shopping cart script. I recommend
this option, because more webmasters will buy traffic from
you if you have a professional shopping cart and merchant
account.
That's all there is to it. Before you carry on with the rest
of today's work... Get a page on each of your content sites
offering to sell whatever forms of traffic you decide.
